Description:
The team at Columbia LDEO purchased a NAS RAID system for project data backup. This is a possible solution for others looking for large capacity data storage.
"It will provide 32Tb raw storage using 8x 4Tb drives, and if we use RAID6 (which I'm leaning towards rather than RAID5) it will provide 24Tb of actual storage. With RAID6 two drives can fail without interruption of data service.
This NAS should address our data archiving and access needs, notably for all the Phantom video. Note that it is not a backup system though: RAIDs provide continuous up-time even if a drive fails; however, when failure does occur a replacement drive needs to be hot-swapped in and the system rebuilt on the fly. The rebuild slows access and can go wrong. Ironically, it's right after a drive failure that backup (if not done before) must be carried out - then the system can be rebuilt."
